That was quite the non-answer he gave you. Not to mention untruthful, as the listing you referenced wasn't upfront or clear at all about any of the things you were asking about.

I was thinking the same thing!

‘“Exposure” isn’t opportunity, it’s exploitation.’ New VO bumper sticker! 😆

So true, I get there are indie projects with like zero budgets, but transparency is key. After your rates talk I did a serious deep dive on usage and the difference between each vertical and finally got my rate guide made!

I think it's okay to do low budget indie projects or even free fan/student projects for fun - we just have to be realistic about what we're getting out of it. Exposure? Maybe, in some relatively small circles, but not likely to the people and places that are going to help us grow professionally. But we need to know what we're getting into, and that listing Mandy mentioned doesn't give us the knowledge to make an informed choice, and I think THAT is the biggest issue.

Speaking of AI, his reply is positively dripping with that signature AI sound.

exposure is the free stuff i choose to participate in for fun: contests, festivals, game jams, etc.

but the cheap work i have done and still do is subcontracted faceless YouTube content for $15. yes, i deserve the judgement. however, I've gotten really fast at recording, editing, and working out that send it and forget it muscle!

Sometimes it feels like people/companies are becoming more predatory when it comes to voiceover, partially trying to take advantage of both the newer talent and the fear of AI 😅
