$5
Five dollars isn’t a rate. It’s a warning.
Over the last few months, I’ve seen a couple new voiceover casting sites pop up and even though I’m not a fan of freelance sites or p2ps, part of my job is to understand them. So I signed up for one—DimVoices. I immediately was annoyed that the two filters I set, “female” and “paid” didn’t yield any jobs. But, “ok,” I thought, “let’s just see what happens when we remove all of the filters and let’s get a sense of what’s happening here.”
I scroll for a sec and then I see: “Sports Ad. Commercial. Paid: $5. One-time payment.”
Go ahead. Take a second. Let it sink in.
Here’s the part that actually bothers me, and no, it’s not the five bucks. (I mean, yes, that’s annoying AF but the REAL issue is…It’s that someone is going to take it.)
Someone excited. Someone hungry. Someone who just finished their demo, needs a credit, and thinks this is how momentum starts. And the platform listing it? Doesn’t tell them anything. Not where it’s running. Not how long. Not what media. Not the territory. Not whether their voice can be reused. Not whether any of that can ever be undone. But there IS a note about zero AI usage which, is great, but not enough.
So, let’s just clarify that “commercial” is not a category. It’s a contract. A commercial can be a student project three people see. It can be a regional TV spot. It can be a national paid campaign blasted across every platform you’ve ever doomscrolled. Those are not the same job. Not the same rate. Not even the same planet.
But on a lot of these newer platforms, they show up exactly the same. Same vague title. Same shrug of a description. And somehow, a five dollar price tag that made it through a review process that I assume exists in theory.
Let me be clear about something:
The platforms are not entirely the villains here. Some of them are trying. Better UI. Community features. Slightly more transparency than the dark ages. Fine. Gold star. But none of that matters if the listing doesn’t require, not suggest, REQUIRE the basics:
Where is this running?
For how long?
Paid or organic?
Local, regional, national, global?
Broadcast, digital, internal, social?
Exclusivity?
AI usage?
If that information isn’t there, you are not booking a job, you are signing something you do not understand. And new actors get hit the hardest. Not because they’re naive, but because they’re exactly where the industry wants them: Excited. Building a portfolio. Still learning rate structures. Ready to move fast because it finally feels like something is happening. Platforms know that. The math works for them.
It does not work for you. And this is where things get predatory.
I’ve talked about usage before. You’ve read it. You nodded. You said, “Yeah, yeah, usage matters.” And then you went right back on the platform anyway. And I’m not judging, ok. I know that some of these sites work REALLY WELL for SOME of you.
I get it.
But here’s the line:
Every audition you submit is a vote.
Every rate you accept is a signal.
Every unclear contract you ignore becomes the new normal.
That five dollar “commercial” is not a fluke. It’s a precedent. Before you audition for anything, ANYTHING from ANYONE, even your agents, ask yourself three questions:
Do I know exactly how this will be used?
Do I know how long it lives?
Do I know what I’m giving away?
If the answer to any of those is no, don’t audition. Not because you’re above it but because you’re building something. And five dollars is not a foundation. It’s a hole. “Exposure” isn’t opportunity, it’s exploitation.
To be fair, I reached out to the creator with my concerns and he was receptive, respectful, and civil however, he didn’t exactly answer or address my concerns:
So go ahead. What’s the lowest rate you’ve ever been offered on one of these platforms, and did you take it? Drop it in the comments. No judgment. Well………… minimal judgment.

That was quite the non-answer he gave you. Not to mention untruthful, as the listing you referenced wasn't upfront or clear at all about any of the things you were asking about.
‘“Exposure” isn’t opportunity, it’s exploitation.’ New VO bumper sticker! 😆
So true, I get there are indie projects with like zero budgets, but transparency is key. After your rates talk I did a serious deep dive on usage and the difference between each vertical and finally got my rate guide made!
