SMART
Goals are the difference between stuck and scaling
I hear this all the time:
“I want to make more money.”
“I want to land a commercial.”
“I just need better strategy.”
“If I had an agent, everything would fall into place.”
“I think it’s an energy issue.”
None of those are goals. They’re feelings. And feelings don’t build careers.
If you’re stuck at four figures and want five or six… that’s not a motivation problem. That’s a measurement problem. Let’s fix it.
The Problem with “I Want to Make 6 Figures”
Six figures sounds impressive. It also means nothing unless you break it down.
If you’re at $40,000 a year and want to hit $100,000:
That’s $60,000 more.
That’s $5,000 a month.
That’s:
Ten $500 jobs
Five $1,000 commercials
Two mid-sized $2,500 eLearning projects
One solid $5K retainer client
Suddenly it’s not some mystical “six-figure voice actor” identity.
It’s volume, poisitioning, and most of all it’s just freakin’ math.
When actors say, “I’m stuck,” what they usually mean is:
I don’t know how many reps I’m actually doing.
I don’t know how many touches I’m making.
I don’t know my conversion rate.
I don’t know what I’ve done in the last 6 months.
I don’t track anything consistently.
You don’t need motivation…you need data.
Vague goals keep you safe
“Land a commercial gig.” People love to answer in vagueries when I ask them specifics. And I don’t think it’s because they’re trying to be evasive or mysterious, I think it has more to do with the lack of specificity in their imagination. “Land a commercial gig” sounds great! It’s also completely out of your control.
What is in your control?
